it continues to irk, no, dishearten me how quickly people (unthinkingly) dismiss rupi kaur. i don't know her personally or even her poetry that well, but what i know very well is all the chatter around her. i remember when she first started out and her poems were plastered all over the newly-minted instagram, the outpost for a healthy tumblr poetics. the words felt like they were dropped amongst thin flowers in square boxes. what people forget is that some of the poems were about rape. that's also part of it, i think, the distaste. the across-the-board cringing-out stance that everyone seemed to take. we forget she's a human, a person, a girl, expressing something in the way she knew how, and paving the way for so many to find poetry accessible and find a form that worked for them. there's so much more i can say but im tired. tbc......
